Where the programme happens

All ceremonies take place in Peru, under Peruvian law, where this medicine has been in traditional use for around three thousand years and where its ceremonial use is recognised as part of the cultural heritage of the country.

No medicine is supplied, sold, shipped or administered outside Peru. Nothing crosses an international border in connection with this programme, and no part of what we teach is an invitation to obtain or use this plant anywhere it is not lawful.

Participants are responsible for their own compliance with the laws of their country of residence.

Eligibility and health

Participation is subject to a health and medication review. Every applicant completes a written application and speaks with us one to one before any deposit is taken.

Some medications, including antidepressants and other serotonergic drugs, are not compatible with this medicine. Some medical and psychiatric conditions are also incompatible. We may decline an application on these grounds, and we will say so plainly and refund anything already paid.

Nothing on this website is medical advice, and nothing here is a diagnosis, a treatment or a promise of a therapeutic outcome. Decisions about your medication belong to you and your prescriber.

The programme involves walking at altitude, above nine thousand feet, for several hours at a time. Please tell us about anything that affects that.

Insurance

We recommend travel and medical insurance. We do not require it and we do not provide it.

Cover that includes emergency medical treatment and evacuation is worth having at altitude in a country where your policy at home may not reach. Whatever you decide, medical and evacuation costs are yours.

Payment

A deposit of $500 confirms a place, whichever room is chosen. The balance is paid in two parts: half of what remains after the deposit is due two months before departure, and the remaining half one month before departure.

Paying the full amount at the time of booking stands in lieu of the deposit and reduces the total by $200. The reduction is available at booking only.

Prices are in United States dollars. Bank charges and currency conversion costs are the participant’s own.

Cancellation

The cancellation terms are set out in writing before any deposit is taken, and we go through them with you on the phone during the application call. Nobody is asked to pay anything before they have seen them.

If we cancel a group for any reason, everything paid is refunded in full.

If you withdraw and your place is taken by another accepted applicant, everything you have paid is refunded.

Deposits and payments are otherwise not refundable. A group of nine is booked, staffed and provisioned around the people in it, and those costs are committed well before departure.

So if illness, travel disruption or a change of circumstances means you cannot travel, contact us as early as you can. The more notice we have, the more time there is to offer the place to another accepted applicant.

Your information

Huachuma Works LLC controls the information collected here. The short version: we collect what the programme needs, we keep it for as long as the programme needs it, we hold health information in confidence, and we do not sell it or share it for advertising.

The application asks for your name, email and phone, your health history, your medications and supplements, and what you are hoping for. The rest arrives as you travel with us: dietary needs, emergency contacts and insurance confirmation. Server logs and traffic figures arrive on their own and say how the site is doing rather than who you are.

If you join the mailing list we will email you about what Huachuma Works and the Foundation are doing. Every email has an unsubscribe link and it works.

Your health information

What you tell us about your health and your medications is given voluntarily and held in confidence. It is read by the people running the programme, it is used to decide whether this is safe and suitable for you and to look after you while you are with us, and it stays between us unless you give written permission or the law requires disclosure.

None of the information we collect is HIPAA health information, and Huachuma Works LLC is not a HIPAA covered entity: it bills no insurance and practises as no licensed healthcare provider. We hold what you tell us to that standard anyway.

The application form stores your answers on this website’s server. Applications stay in place while we are working together and for one year after the group returns. Financial records last as long as tax and accounting rules require. An application from somebody we do not accept is deleted once the decision is made and told to you.

We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross context advertising, as California defines those terms. That has never happened here.

Ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to hello@huachumaworks.com and we will answer within 30 days, once we have confirmed who you are. Deletion covers everything except records we are required to keep. Asking costs nothing and changes nothing about how your application is read.

This site is operated from Arizona and information is stored in the United States. This programme is for adults, and we knowingly collect nothing from anyone under 18.

This website

The content of this site is published for education. Links to the Huachuma Foundation and to other organisations are provided for reference, and we are not responsible for what is on sites we do not run.

Photographs on this site were taken during our own programmes in Peru and are published with the consent of the people in them.

Questions about any of this are welcome before you apply rather than after. The trip page carries the price and what is included, and the application is where the health and medication conversation starts.
